We've got the good people

Phone banking tonight, I had the pleasure of speaking with a very nice lady who, to say the least, is an energetic supporter of Minnesota Republicans.

When I asked if we could count on her vote on November 7th, she proceeded to tell me about all the volunteer work she was doing for the party.

Then, she said (in a thick Russian accent):
"And we're going to win! We're going to win, because we've got the good people, and the good people will win!"

Time will tell if she's right, but her enthusiasm put a smile on my face!

Bloggers for Fine

Brilliant... I wish I would've thought of it.

Back and refreshed, Doug Williams has come out of retirement in time to begin what I hope will be a wide-sweeping movement: The Coalition for Growing a Pair.

It's the perfect response to Gary's temporary insanity.

Chief Freedom Dog and Minnesota SD45 Senate Candidate Derek Brigham found the time to make a graphic for the CFGP -- well done!

Tammy Lee supports "Murtha plan"

Fifth district Congressional candidates Alan Fine and Tammy Lee appeared on the Taxpayer's League Live radio show on Saturday.

The candidates were asked about their positions on the Iraq war. While Fine reinforced the need for victory, Tammy Lee said that she supported the "Murtha plan." Recall that John Murtha wants immediate withdrawal and redeployment of US troops.

Again, I urge fellow Minnesota Republicans not to defect to the cut-and-run candidate Tammy Lee. With control of Congress at stake, do we really want to see Minnesota represented by someone who supports a plan to redeploy to Okinawa?

The case for Alan Fine

...a. k. a., the case against Tammy Lee.

(cross-posted at Northern Alliance Wannabe)

I'm disturbed to see some of my MOB brothers and sisters - purported conservatives - throwing their support behind Tammy Lee for Congress in the MN 5th.

The argument some are making is:
1. They want anyone to win other than Keith Ellison
2. Fine can't win, and Lee is at least a fiscal conservative

I think we're all behind #1, but I don't buy #2 for a second, and here's why.

Fine can win

Some claim that Fine cannot possibly win because no Republican received better than 26% of the vote in the last three elections. This is a false argument, because it ignores that there were different candidates in those elections.

By that logic, we should have all just stayed home in 2000, because Bush could never have been elected President. After all, "the Republican" only got 41% of the vote in 1996!

Data from the MN 5th in recent elections is irrelevant because "the Republican" (not Fine, by the way) was up against an unbeatable Marty Sabo. There's no denying that the 5th is a hard left district, but the election dynamics are different enough this time around to make comparison to previous elections misleading.

Two things I observe:
  • Poll data for the MN 5th is nowhere to be found.

  • The Star Tribune is going way out of its way to smear Alan Fine.

  • This tells me that the Strib is scared that Fine can win.

Tammy Lee is not a fiscal conservative

Her slogan, "Fiscally responsible. Socially progressive." is catchy, but let's break down her positions in her own words.

Her platform on education (emphasis mine):
Yes! Investments in early childhood education, quality Pre-Kindergarten, and Head Start

Yes! Fully fund the federal government's share (40%) of Title I and IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) requirements to educate disadvantaged and special needs students in public schools.

Yes! Fully fund Title II federal requirements for teacher and paraprofessional training and development.

No! Diversion of taxpayer dollars for private school vouchers.

No! More unfunded federal education mandates

What I see is a lot of funding (i. e., tax increases). The only thing she doesn't want to fund is vouchers. She'd rather keep the money going to failing schools.

Her platform on energy (emphasis mine):
Yes! Re-direct the $6 billion in tax breaks that Congress is giving to Big Oil companies to research and development of alternative and renewable energy sources.

Yes! Encourage responsible investments in light rail and mass transit with federal matching grants for states.

Yes! Increase the CAFÉ standards (corporate average fuel economy) for U.S. vehicles.

Yes! Require at least 20% of our electricity comes from clean, renewable sources by 2020.

Yes! Encourage greater use of wind power and other alternative energies - for consumers and corporations.

Again we see higher taxes, not just for "Big Oil," but for all of us in the form of mass transit boondoggles, and we will see higher costs for cars and fuel as a result of the federal mandates she supports.

Tammy Lee is a liberal, not a moderate

If you're still thinking of voting for Lee just because she's "not Keith Ellison," let's look at some more of her positions.

  • She's pro-amnesty for illegal immigrants. She wants to "[p]rovide an earned pathway to legal citizenship for undocumented workers who are law-abiding and already contributing to our economy."

  • She wants to cut-and-run from Iraq. Her position is to "[i]mmediately begin the process of U.S. troop withdrawal."

  • She trusts the "world community" to combat the Axis of Evil. She wants to "[o]rganize a multinational response to stop Iran's nuclear program," and she wants to "[p]ursue multilateral negotiations led by the United Nations' Security Council to put pressure on North Korea to stop its missile production."

  • She's pro-abortion. She "will support a woman's right to choose." And are you ready for some more taxes? Lee also wants to fund:
  • Sex education in our public schools.

  • Access to contraception - especially emergency contraception. We can dramatically reduce the number of abortions through emergency contraception.

  • Healthcare coverage for pregnant women and their children after they are born. Requiring S-CHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) to cover pregnant women and their children throughout the pregnancy and the first full year of the child's life.

  • Child care subsidies for working mothers.

  • Making the adoption tax credits permanent.

  • Just how different are these positions from those of Keith Ellison?

The bottom line is that Alan Fine does have a chance to win this election, but only if Republicans and conservatives unite behind him. We need to make sure that Tammy Lee is the Ralph Nader of this race, not the Ross Perot of this race.

    Patriot rally

Many thanks to AM 1280, the Patriot for hosting the rally in Hopkins last night. It was energizing.

Hosted by Commissioner Hewitt, the speakers were (in order) Alan Fine, Michele Bachmann, Mark Kennedy, and Norm Coleman.

They all did a great job. Fine and Kennedy both made good cases for not listening to the Strib's constant drumbeat that those races are over and we have no chance. Coleman also reminded us about how much of an underdog he was going into his election in '02. The star of the evening, though, was Michele Bachmann. She was absolutely electric! I don't see how anyone could leave that event not inspired to kick ass for the next three weeks to bring our candidates across the finish line.

Triple A live-blogged the event, as did the Cap'n.

Ok, now break's over. Get back to work!

    Keith Ellison: Pride Of Minnesota

(Coral Springs, FL) On Saturday, October 14, 2006, Americans Against Hate (AAH) will be leading a protest against the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Minnesota Candidate for U.S. Congress Keith Ellison, and Florida Gubernatorial Candidate Jim Davis. The protest will be taking place at the Southwest Focal Point Senior Center, in Pembroke Pines, Florida, which is playing host to a CAIR sponsored event featuring Ellison as Keynote Speaker.

The reason for the protest is to call attention to the fact that both Ellison and Davis have accepted campaign donations from CAIR officials. According to records, Keith Ellison received contributions from CAIR's National Executive Director Nihad Awad and CAIR's Government Affairs Director Corey Sawyer. As well, according to records, Jim Davis has received a contribution from the Communications Director of CAIR-Florida Ahmed Bedier.

AAH calls this a conflict of interest and a betrayal of the voters, as CAIR has been linked to convicted terrorists, terrorist acts and terrorist groups overseas. CAIR was incorporated in June of 1994 by three leaders of the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), a Hamas front co-founded by the number two leader in Hamas today, Mousa Abu Marzook. Two of CAIR's former representatives are currently serving jail time for conducting terrorist activities with groups connected to Hamas and Al-Qaeda. And CAIR is currently the defendant in a lawsuit for the murder of an FBI Agent who was killed during the 9/11 attacks.

Both Awad and Bedier, two of the campaign contributors, have made disturbing statements with regard to terrorist organizations. Awad stated, in March of 1994, "...I am in support of the Hamas movement more than the PLO." And Bedier, in December of 2005, when asked if he believed Sami Al-Arian's association with Palestinian Islamic Jihad was immoral, said, "To a certain degree. Now, before 1995, there was nothing immoral about it." In addition, in July of 2006, Bedier co-hosted a radio show entirely devoted to praise for Hezbollah.

AAH Chairman and founder of CAIR Watch, Joe Kaufman, who will be speaking at the protest, stated, "It is beyond bad taste and completely unacceptable for candidates seeking high positions within the U.S. government to accept money from those individuals that support terrorist organizations and who are connected to a group whose former officials include convicted terrorists. This is nothing more than a betrayal of the voters of Minnesota and Florida."

    A Tale Of Two Hities

Scott Johnson looks at the Star Tribune's shifting standards in another excellent piece at Power Line:

In their Sunday Star Tribune story, Paul McEnroe and Rochelle Olson blow the whistle on Alan Fine for an expunged arrest that was never even charged by a prosecutor. Star Tribune reader's representative Kate Parry now claims that the Star Tribune has "corroborated" the charge leading to Fine's expunged arrest, even though it has done little more than recycle the underlying allegation. In 1982, the Star Tribune denounced the disclosure of Marlene Johnson's adjudicated shoplifting charge -- a charge that had been tried to conviction before a judge -- as scurrilous.

    Strib strikes again

John at Power Line has a terrific report about the unfair and unbalanced reporting by the Star Tribune on the 5th CD candidates.

It is important that voters understand what is happening here. Read the whole thing: Star Tribune Sucker-Punches Republican Candidate.
