You don't often find the Star Tribune's Doug Grow (or anyone else at the paper for that matter) waxing positively on Republican candidates. That's why this column came as a pleasant surprise:
There were small tables lit by candles and people sipping cocktails Tuesday night as the star of the show, Alan Fine, walked to the front of the Varsity Theater in Dinkytown.
The Republican candidate for the Fifth District congressional seat being vacated by Martin Olav Sabo was applauded by a crowd of more than 300 people.
"Biggest problem we have is finding enough chairs," said one of Fine's harried campaign workers.
What a unique problem for a Republican in this DFL-owned district. What a rare opportunity to fire up the faithful.
